Hobson & Rees, 1955) and served to identify them by synthetic as opposed to degradative means. Throughout the species investigated the phosphokinases predicted by the previous results were all proved to be present and capable ofphosphorylating the expected base. As was reported for some of the echinoderms (Needham & Baldwin, 1937), several annelids, e.g. Glycera gigantea, Nerei8 diversicolor and Myxicola infundibulum, contain a mixture of phosphagens and show that the enzyme systems for the synthesis and utilization of phosphagens in living muscle are completely duplicated. The experimental results again emphasize that creatine phosphate, acting as a phosphagen, is not confined to the echinoderms, protochordates and vertebrates, but is also present, often in considerable quantities, in the annelids. At the present time the distribution of creatine phosphate appears quite arbitrary. This fact lessens the value of the identification of the phosphagens in evolutionary studies in the animal kingdom.

Incorporation of radioactive amino acids into proteins of the microsome fraction of guinea-pig liver in a cell-free system.
Although the synthesis of specific soluble proteins has rarely, if ever, been unequivocally demonstrated to occur in cell-free preparations of mammalian cells, the capacity for the uptake of amino acids into peptide linkage in 'non-specific' protein is less readily destroyed by damage to the cell. Thus the incorporation of labelled amino acids into the acid-precipitable protein of tissue homoge...
متن کاملIncorporation of amino acids into lipoidal material by microsomal and supernatant fractions of rat tissues.
The function of the microsomes as a primary site of protein biosynthesis is well established (1). Both microsomal and soluble ribonucleic acid have been shown to participate in the incorporation of amino acids into ribonucleoproteins in vitro. This phenomenon has been interpreted as a step in the synthesis de nouo of proteins (2). Hendler (3) has suggested that lipids might also be involved in ...
متن کاملAmino acid incorporation in vitro by ribonucleoprotein particles detached from guinea pig liver microsomes.
Since it has been shown that the recombined mitochondrial, microsomal, and supernatant fractions of rat liver are able to incorporate radioactive alanine into trichloroacetic acid-insoluble protein (1)) many investigators have worked on the purification and characterization of the amino acid incorporation system of liver cells. The results of their efforts have been reviewed most recently by Lo...
متن کاملStudies on the biosynthesis of protein by lactating guinea-pig mammary gland. Characteristics of the synthesis of alpha-lactalbumin and total protein by slices and cell-free systems.
1. Slices of lactating guinea-pig mammary gland were incubated with radioactive amino acids and the various subcellular fractions separated by centrifugation after disruption of the cells by mincing and homogenization. The most active fraction for protein synthesis appeared to be the ;mitochondrial'. 2. When the subcellular fractions were prepared without previous incubation of the cells and we...
متن کاملThe Stimulation by Treatment in Vivo with Tri-iodothyronine of Amino Acid Incorporation into Protein by Isolated Rat-liver Mitochondria.
1. Normal and thyroidectomized rats were treated with near-physiological doses of tri-iodothyronine. Liver mitochondria were isolated and incubated with radioactive amino acids. In normal rats tri-iodothyronine caused only a slight stimulation of incorporation into mitochondrial protein, but in thyroidectomized animals the incorporation was doubled. 2. There was a lag period of about 36 hr. aft...
